How to Check if a Samsung Phone Is Original in Kenya

SAMSUNG Galaxy S26 FE

The quickest way to check if a Samsung phone is original in Kenya is to dial *#06#, then SMS the 15-digit IMEI to 1555. The Communications Authority of Kenya replies with the make and model registered to that IMEI. If the reply does not say Samsung and the exact model you are holding, walk away. The other checks below take five minutes and catch the rest.

1. Check the IMEI with the Communications Authority

  1. Dial *#06#. The phone shows its IMEI (two numbers on a dual-SIM phone; either one works).
  2. Send the 15 digits by SMS to 1555.
  3. Compare the reply with the phone. Make and model must match exactly, for example “Samsung Galaxy A57 5G”, not just “Samsung” or another brand.

2. Match the IMEI in three places

The IMEI from *#06# must be the same as the one in Settings > About phone and the one printed on the box label. A mismatch means the phone, the box or the software has been tampered with.

3. Check the model number

Genuine Samsung phones have a model number starting with SM- (for example SM-A576B) in Settings > About phone. It should match the model number on the box. Copies often show a made-up number or the name of a different phone.

4. Check the software

  • Open Settings > About phone > Software information. A real Galaxy shows a One UI version and Knox version.
  • Look for Samsung apps that copies cannot run properly: Galaxy Store, Samsung Account and Samsung Members.
  • In Samsung Members, open Diagnostics and run the phone checks. Copies usually fail to open it or fail the tests.

5. Check the storage and screen

Fake phones often claim more storage or RAM than they have. Install a large app or copy a big video and see if the free space drops as expected. On phones sold with an AMOLED screen, blacks should be truly black in a dark room; a grey glow suggests a cheaper LCD panel.

6. Check the warranty and the seller

  • Ask what warranty you are getting and get it on the receipt. Many phones in Kenya are grey imports with no local warranty, which matters when something breaks. See why a 24-month local warranty matters.
  • Be suspicious of prices far below other shops. A new phone cannot be sold far under cost for long.
  • Buy from a shop with a physical address and a returns policy, and keep the receipt.
