If you are choosing between the A37 8GB/256GB and the A57 8GB/128GB, the prices are close, so the decision comes down to whether you value storage (A37) or a faster phone with a better screen and camera (A57). Read the table one way: the two phones are the same where it matters for most people (screen size, main camera, battery, water resistance, updates) and the A57 is better in four specific areas: speed, display quality, ultra-wide photos and how it feels in the hand.
Design and build: the A57 feels more premium
Pick both phones up at our shop and the difference is obvious. The A57 is 6.9mm thick and weighs 179g. The A37 is 7.4mm and 196g. That 17g gap is roughly the weight of a light phone case, and it makes the A57 noticeably easier to hold for long WhatsApp chats or video calls.
Both carry an IP68 rating, so either one can survive a heavy Nairobi downpour or an accidental drop in water. IP68 is still not a licence to swim with your phone, and water damage is normally not covered by warranty, so treat it as protection against accidents.
Display: same size, different quality
Both screens are 6.7-inch FHD+ panels running at 120Hz, so scrolling, gaming and watching YouTube feel smooth on either phone.
The A57 uses a Super AMOLED Plus panel with Vision Booster, Samsung’s technology for keeping colours and contrast readable in strong sunlight. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, ride boda bodas, work in the field or simply use your phone on the street in the afternoon sun, this is the upgrade you will notice every day. The A57 also has slimmer bezels, so the screen looks bigger even though the size is the same.
Performance: Exynos 1680 vs Exynos 1480
The A57 runs Samsung’s newer Exynos 1680, the A37 the Exynos 1480. Both are 4nm chips and both handle everyday use well: WhatsApp, M-Pesa, TikTok, Instagram, Google Maps and banking apps all run smoothly on the A37.
Where the A57 pulls ahead is under pressure: heavy games like eFootball or Call of Duty Mobile, editing videos for social media, or keeping many apps open at once. It is also offered with more RAM in Samsung’s line-up (8GB or 12GB against 6GB or 8GB on the A37), which helps apps stay open in the background. If you keep your phones for four or five years, the faster chip will also age better.
Cameras: the difference is the ultra-wide
Both phones use a 50MP f/1.8 main camera, a 5MP macro camera and a 12MP selfie camera, so everyday photos, portraits and selfies look very similar.
The difference is the ultra-wide lens: 12MP on the A57 against 8MP on the A37. You use the ultra-wide for group photos at a wedding or chama meeting, landscapes on a trip to Naivasha, or shots inside small rooms. The A57’s higher resolution keeps more detail in those wide shots, especially when you zoom in or crop afterwards. If most of your photos are of people and food with the main camera, the A37 will serve you just as well.
Battery and charging
Both phones have a 5,000mAh battery and support fast wired charging. With the same battery capacity and efficient 4nm chips, expect a full day of normal use from either phone. Heavy gamers will drain the A57 a little faster simply because they will push it harder. Ask us at the shop which Samsung charger suits your model if you need one.
Software and updates: a tie
This is where Samsung has been generous. Both phones run One UI 8.5 and Samsung promises up to six generations of Android and One UI upgrades plus extended security updates. That means the A37 is not a phone you will need to replace early because of software. Both also get the same Galaxy AI tools: Circle to Search with Google, Object Eraser for removing people from photos, AI Select and Voice Transcription, with Gemini and Bixby assistants.
Which should you buy?
Buy the Galaxy A57 5G if you:
- play games or edit videos on your phone
- use your phone outdoors a lot and want the brighter Vision Booster screen
- take many group or landscape photos (12MP ultra-wide)
- want the slimmest, lightest A series phone
- plan to keep the phone for five years or more
Buy the Galaxy A37 5G if you:
- mainly use WhatsApp, social media, M-Pesa, YouTube and calls
- want IP68, a 6.7-inch 120Hz screen and six years of updates for less
- would rather spend the difference on a case, screen protector or earbuds
- want 256GB of storage without paying A57 256GB money
Our verdict: for most buyers in Kenya, the Galaxy A37 5G is the better value, because it shares the A57’s screen size, main camera, battery, water resistance and update promise. The Galaxy A57 5G is the better phone, and it is worth the extra money if you care about speed, outdoor screen visibility or wide-angle photos. If your budget is lower still, look at the Galaxy A27 5G (from KSh 32,000); if you are coming from last year’s model, our Galaxy A56 vs A57 comparison will help.
